New Delhi, 30 July 2025:
In a major step toward maritime self-reliance, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has initiated the construction of its first indigenously built Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) at Chowgule and Company Private Limited’s Rassaim Yard in Goa. The development marks a key milestone in the ICG’s ongoing efforts to boost its operational capabilities with homegrown technology.

The construction follows a contract signed on 24 October 2024 between the Ministry of Defence and Chowgule Shipyard for the development of six state-of-the-art ACVs. These hovercraft are based on proven Griffon Hoverwork designs and are being built entirely in India, showcasing a strong push toward the government’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) initiative.
A ceremonial Girder Laying and Commencement of Erection function was held at the yard today to mark the start of the project. The event was attended by Inspector General Sudhir Sahni, TM, Deputy Director General (Materiel & Maintenance) of the Indian Coast Guard.

“These ACVs will significantly enhance the Coast Guard’s ability to patrol shallow waters, intercept threats quickly, and conduct maritime rescue operations,” said officials. “Built with Indian precision and expertise, they are designed to deliver unmatched speed, agility, and tactical reach.”
Once commissioned, the hovercraft will serve as high-speed, versatile platforms capable of navigating challenging coastal terrains, reinforcing the Coast Guard’s ability to safeguard India’s maritime borders with greater efficiency and strength.
The project not only represents a leap forward in indigenous defence manufacturing but also reaffirms India’s growing capabilities in modern shipbuilding and maritime security infrastructure.
