New Delhi, August 4, 2025 — In a significant boost to India’s defence indigenization efforts, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied critical-grade steel for two major naval milestones—INS Ajay and INS Nistar—further solidifying its role as a strategic partner in the country’s maritime modernization.
The Maharatna PSU, and India’s largest steelmaker, provided the complete supply of special DMR-grade steel plates for INS Ajay, the eighth and final vessel in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) series. The vessel was launched by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) in July and is designed for stealth operations and enhanced structural integrity, key for anti-submarine missions in shallow waters.

Additionally, SAIL also supplied the entire requirement of special-grade steel plates for INS Nistar, India’s first indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV), commissioned by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. (HSL). The vessel is equipped for submarine rescue operations, deep-sea diving missions, and long-duration maritime patrols.
With these contributions, SAIL continues to reinforce its commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat, playing a pivotal role in strengthening India’s naval capabilities through homegrown solutions. The company’s specialized steel products have become a critical component in the construction of advanced warships and support vessels, symbolizing the fusion of industrial strength with national defence objectives.
“Every tonne of steel from SAIL is a step toward a stronger, self-reliant India,” the company said, emphasizing its long-standing support for the Indian Navy’s modernization and maritime preparedness.
