New Delhi, July 23, 2025 — In a major boost to India’s maritime environmental protection capabilities, Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) on Tuesday successfully launched “Samudra Prachet,” the second indigenous Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) built for the Indian Coast Guard.
The vessel, designated GSL Yard 1268, is the last of the two PCVs being constructed under this class. The first vessel, Yard 1267, was launched in August 2024 and is nearing delivery. Both ships have been designed and built in-house by GSL, a premier defence public sector undertaking (DPSU), marking a significant stride toward India’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India).

The launch ceremony was held in the presence of Director General Paramesh Sivamani, AVSM, PTM, TM, Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, who served as the Chief Guest. The vessel was ceremoniously launched by Smt Priya Paramesh, while other dignitaries included IG Bhisham Sharma, IG Sudhir Sahni, and GSL Chairman & Managing Director Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay. Senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, Coast Guard, and GSL were also in attendance.
With a length of 114.5 meters, breadth of 16.5 meters, and displacement of 4,170 tonnes, Samudra Prachet is equipped with cutting-edge pollution response technology. The vessel is specifically designed to provide rapid and effective oil spill response within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), enhancing the Coast Guard’s ability to mitigate maritime environmental disasters.

DG Sivamani highlighted the strategic importance of pollution response vessels in protecting India’s maritime environment and commended the strong synergy between GSL and the Coast Guard. He lauded the indigenous effort and called for continued momentum towards self-reliance in defence shipbuilding.
Beyond bolstering maritime capabilities, the project has also significantly contributed to local industry development. It has generated substantial employment and provided a boost to MSMEs and entrepreneurs involved in marine production activities across Goa.
The launch of Samudra Prachet not only reflects India’s technological advancement in maritime infrastructure but also reinforces GSL’s position as a leading shipyard capable of delivering next-generation vessels for national defence and environmental protection.
