New Delhi: Team India’s preparations for their upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 match against Namibia suffered a setback on Wednesday evening after opener Ishan Kishan picked up an injury during a practice session. Adding to the team’s concerns, fellow opener Abhishek Sharma is also battling illness just a day before the crucial fixture in Delhi.

According to reports, the incident occurred when a sharp yorker from pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah struck Kishan on the toe of his left foot during net practice. The impact left the young batter in visible pain as he went down immediately. Team physiotherapists rushed to assess him on the spot, and he was later seen limping away from the nets.
Though Kishan attempted to resume batting after a brief break, his session was cut short due to discomfort. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet released an official statement regarding the severity of his injury.
Abhishek Still Recovering
The situation is further complicated by Abhishek Sharma’s health issues. The left-handed opener has been recovering from a stomach infection and was admitted to a Delhi hospital for two days before being discharged on Wednesday. His participation in Thursday’s match remains doubtful.

Young batter Tilak Varma, speaking after practice, said a final decision on Abhishek’s availability would be taken closer to match time. If he is ruled out, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is likely to step in. Samson spent considerable time in the nets on Wednesday, facing both pace and spin with growing confidence as the session progressed.
Team Backing Samson
Samson’s role in the squad has been closely watched in recent weeks. He did not open in India’s first World Cup match in Mumbai, a decision that drew attention. Team management, however, has maintained that selections are made in the best interest of the side. With the tournament still in its early stages, officials have reiterated that all 15 squad members remain vital to India’s campaign.
During practice, Samson appeared cautious early on against the quick bowlers but soon found his rhythm. His assurance against spin could prove valuable, especially against Namibia’s left-arm spinner Bernard Scholtz.
Positive Signs for Bumrah
In more encouraging news, Tilak Varma provided an optimistic update on Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness. The star pacer, who missed India’s opening match, is reportedly feeling better and participated fully in bowling and fielding drills on Wednesday. A final call on his inclusion will be taken before the Namibia game, but there is hope he could return to regain match rhythm ahead of Sunday’s high-profile clash against Pakistan.

Crucial Warm-Up Before Pakistan Showdown
The team management views the Namibia encounter as an important stepping stone before the much-anticipated contest against Pakistan. With player fitness under scrutiny, Thursday’s match carries added significance—not just for points, but for momentum and confidence heading into the marquee showdown.
Meanwhile, the build-up to the India-Namibia game has not been without controversy. Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over practice scheduling under floodlights, though tournament organizers have stated that any request for a change was received late.
As the countdown to match day continues, India will be hoping for positive medical updates and a smooth outing to keep their World Cup campaign firmly on track.
