Whether it was the 2019 terrorist attack, the COVID-19 pandemic, or the recent economic crisis, India has remained a steadfast ally, helping Sri Lanka overcome its challenges.”
The Prime Minister underscored that India’s commitment to Sri Lanka is reflected in the way both nations have collaborated in times of crisis, providing humanitarian aid, economic support, and diplomatic backing.

In light of Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic challenges, Modi reiterated India’s unwavering support for the island nation. He highlighted that India has made significant financial contributions, including converting more than $100 million of debt into grants in the past six months. Moreover, India’s bilateral debt restructuring agreement aims to offer immediate relief to Sri Lanka’s economy. “We have also taken steps to reduce interest rates, ensuring that Sri Lanka gets the necessary support during this crucial time,” said Modi.

This visit marks Prime Minister Modi’s fourth trip to Sri Lanka since taking office, with his previous visit occurring in 2019 during a sensitive phase in Sri Lanka’s history. At that time, Sri Lanka was reeling from the aftermath of the devastating Easter bombings. Modi expressed his confidence that Sri Lanka would emerge stronger from the tragedy. He praised the resilience and courage of the Sri Lankan people and expressed his joy at seeing the country’s progress and recovery.
