The Untold Story: Why Pankaj Dheer Rejected the Role of Arjun

Interestingly, before being cast as Karna, Pankaj Dheer was initially offered the role of Arjun in Mahabharat. He even auditioned for it and was ready to take it up until he learned that he would have to shave his iconic moustache and appear in a few scenes in a woman’s disguise.

Dheer refused the role, unwilling to part with his trademark moustache. Consequently, the role of Arjun went to Feroz Khan. A few months later, B.R. Chopra approached Dheer again—this time for the role of Karna. His only question was, “I hope I won’t have to shave my moustache?” When Chopra assured him otherwise, Dheer accepted, and the rest became television history.

The production team, under B.R. Chopra, used real and heavy weaponry to make battle scenes look authentic. Several actors, including Dheer, sustained injuries on set during those intense war sequences.

His commitment to realism and passion for performance were evident throughout his career, making him one of the most respected actors of his time.
