Indian Coast Guard Intercepts Fishing Vessel Carrying Suspected illegal smuggling Off West Bengal Coast

Paradip, April 11, 2025 — In a decisive maritime operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) apprehended a fishing vessel allegedly carrying a large quantity of suspected illegal smuggling approximately 72 nautical miles off the coast from Sagar Light in the Bay of Bengal.

The intercepted vessel, identified as IFB Maa Basanti (Registration No: IND-WB-DS-MM-10023), was found to be carrying an estimated 400–450 gunny bags, suspected to be filled with betel nuts. According to officials, each bag weighs between 50 to 60 kilograms, with the total weight of the consignment still being verified.

A total of 14 crew members were aboard the vessel at the time of the interception.

Fishing Vessel : The operation was executed within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone

The operation was executed within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and is part of the Indian Coast Guard’s ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal maritime activities. The Maa Basanti is being escorted to Paradip Port, where it is expected to dock later today. Upon arrival, both the crew and the cargo will be handed over to Customs authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings.
