Ahmedabad: Cricket fans around the world are set for an exciting showdown as defending champions India face New Zealand in the T20 World Cup final on Sunday. The much-anticipated match will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with the game scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM IST. The toss will take place half an hour earlier at 6:30 PM.

This marks the first time the two teams will meet in the final of the ICC’s shortest-format tournament. While India will be playing their fourth T20 World Cup final, New Zealand have reached the title clash for only the second time and are still chasing their first trophy in the competition.

India chasing history

India already have two T20 World Cup titles and now have the opportunity to create history. If they win the final, they will become the first nation to lift the T20 World Cup three times. A victory would also make them the first team to successfully defend the title and the first host country to win the tournament on home soil.

New Zealand’s strong record in World Cups against India

Despite India’s overall success in T20 internationals against New Zealand, the World Cup record tells a different story. The two sides have met three times in the history of the T20 World Cup, and New Zealand have won all three encounters. Those victories came in the 2007, 2016, and 2021 editions of the tournament. Notably, the Black Caps even defeated India on Indian soil during the 2016 tournament.

Overall head-to-head favors India

Looking at the broader T20 International record, India have dominated the rivalry. Out of 30 matches played between the two teams, India have won 18 while New Zealand have secured 11 victories. One match ended in a tie. India have also performed strongly at home, winning 11 of the 16 matches played against New Zealand in India.

Earlier this year, New Zealand toured India for a five-match T20I series in January. India won that series convincingly 4–1, with several high-scoring matches entertaining fans throughout the contest.

Key performers for India

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been India’s most consistent performer with the bat in this tournament. In eight matches, he has scored 263 runs, including two half-centuries, with a top score of 77. Captain Suryakumar Yadav has also contributed significantly, scoring 242 runs in the same number of matches.

On the bowling side, Varun Chakravarthy has impressed with his spin bowling. He has taken 13 wickets so far in the tournament and needs just one more to become the leading wicket-taker of this edition.

New Zealand’s top performers

For New Zealand, Finn Allen has been the standout batter. He has scored 289 runs in eight matches and played a crucial role in taking his team to the final. His most memorable knock came in the semifinal against South Africa, where he smashed an unbeaten century.

All-rounder Rachin Ravindra has been New Zealand’s most effective bowler, picking up 11 wickets in eight games.

Pitch expected to favor batters

The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium is expected to assist batters, setting the stage for a high-scoring final. Reports suggest that a fresh surface prepared using a mix of red and black soil will be used for the match. While spinners may find limited assistance, fast bowlers could benefit from bounce and pace.

Historically, teams batting first have had slightly more success at this venue. Out of 14 T20 internationals played here, eight have been won by the side batting first, while five have been won by teams chasing. The highest total recorded at the stadium is 234 runs, which India scored against New Zealand in 2023.

Weather outlook and reserve day

Weather conditions in Ahmedabad are expected to remain clear, with no chances of rain on match day. The daytime temperature could reach around 41°C, while it may drop to about 23°C in the evening. Nevertheless, the ICC has kept March 9 as a reserve day in case the match cannot be completed on Sunday. If even the reserve day is washed out, the trophy will be shared between both teams.

Possible playing XIs

India: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy.

New Zealand: Finn Allen, Tim Seifert (wk), Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner (captain), Cole McConchie, Matt Henry, Jimmy Neesham, Lockie Ferguson.
