New Delhi, June 9, 2025 — A major fire broke out on the Singapore-flagged container vessel MV Wan Hai 503 early Monday morning following an explosion in one of its containers. The incident occurred around 0920 IST, approximately 44 nautical miles off Azhikkal and 130 nautical miles northwest of Kochi, while the vessel was en route from Colombo to Nhava Sheva port in Mumbai.

The explosion led to a fast-spreading blaze that engulfed the midsection of the ship, forcing all 22 crew members to abandon vessel. As of latest reports, 18 crew members have been rescued, while four remain missing. The crew includes nationals from China (8), Taiwan (6), Myanmar (5), and Indonesia (3).

Indian Coast Guard Launches Massive Rescue and Firefighting Operation

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) responded swiftly, deploying two Dornier surveillance aircraft equipped with liferafts for aerial assessment and rescue coordination. Additionally, five ICG ships — including firefighting and pollution control vessels — were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, activated the International Safety Net (ISN) to alert nearby vessels. Merchant ships MV AMBRA and MV ONE MARVEL diverted course to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts. The initial distress alert was relayed by MV Cape Valencia.

Fire Still Active, Environmental Risks Loom

Preliminary reports indicate that 10 to 15 containers have fallen into the sea, and the vessel remains adrift and emitting dense smoke. Authorities warn of the risk of further explosions and possible structural failure. Maritime traffic in the region has been advised to maintain a safe distance.

The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), India, has directed the vessel’s owners to immediately deploy qualified salvors and firefighting experts. Initial contact has been made with SMIT Salvage, a global leader in emergency marine response. The DGS has also asked for a full disclosure of the nature of cargo onboard the affected containers.

Singapore Authorities Notified, Emergency Coordination Underway

The Flag Administration of Singapore has been formally notified. Meanwhile, the DGS is coordinating closely with the ship management team and all stakeholders to manage the unfolding crisis. The ship’s owners have been instructed to provide updates every two hours until the situation is brought under control.

“Saving lives and containing the fire are our top priorities,” officials stated, as rescue and firefighting operations continue under challenging conditions.
