The Indian Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) ICGS Saksham has made a significant port call at Antsiranana, Madagascar, as part of its ongoing overseas deployment to strengthen ties with friendly nations in the Indian Ocean region. The visit marks a milestone in enhancing maritime cooperation between India and Madagascar.

During the visit, the crew of ICGS Saksham will engage in a series of professional interactions with the Madagascar Coast Guard, focusing on crucial areas such as Marine Pollution Response (MPR), Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR), and Maritime Law Enforcement. The activities will include cross-deck training, joint cultural events, and friendly sports competitions aimed at fostering goodwill between the two nations.

One of the key objectives of the visit is to provide specialized training to Madagascar’s maritime agencies in Marine Pollution Response. The training will cover strategies for handling oil spills, chemical leaks, and other forms of marine pollution, strengthening Madagascar’s ability to tackle environmental challenges in its waters.

ICGS Saksham in community outreach initiatives

In addition to the professional engagements, the ICGS Saksham is also involved in community outreach initiatives. A contingent of 10 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets and 10 Assam Rifles personnel aboard the vessel will participate in environmental protection activities, including a beach cleanup drive and awareness programs in collaboration with local youth organizations. This initiative contributes to India’s Puneet Sagar Abhiyan, a nationwide campaign to promote marine conservation.

Vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat

The visit not only showcases India’s maritime capabilities but also supports the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India), reflecting India’s commitment to enhancing regional security and promoting sustainable environmental practices in the Indian Ocean. The deployment of ICGS Saksham reaffirms India’s dedication to the “SAGAR” (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative, aimed at strengthening regional partnerships for maritime safety, security, and prosperity.

This diplomatic mission underscores the growing relationship between India and Madagascar, contributing to the broader objectives of fostering peace, stability, and mutual cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
