Chennai, April 23, 2025 — The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is set to conduct a large-scale Regional Search and Rescue (SAR) Exercise off the coast of Karaikal on April 24, 2025. Organized by the ICG’s Regional Headquarters (East) in Chennai, the initiative aims to strengthen coordination between maritime and civil agencies in managing sea-based emergencies.

This full-scale simulation will involve five ICG surface units, multiple aircraft, and collaborative efforts from key agencies including the Indian Navy, Customs Department, Karaikal Port authorities, and other stakeholders. The exercise is designed to mirror real-life distress situations at sea, with a focus on fostering operational synergy and improving collective responsiveness.
In the lead-up to the main exercise, a Seminar, Workshop, and Table-Top Exercise were held on April 21 at ICG Station Karaikal. These preparatory events emphasized the need for a unified approach to maritime rescue operations and were well-attended by officials from various sectors.
Among the dignitaries present were Shri Soma Shekhar Appa Rao, IAS, District Collector of Karaikal, and Shri T. Aakash, IAS, District Collector of Nagapattinam. Senior representatives from the ICG, district administrations, and allied agencies also participated, engaging in discussions on strategic planning and shared protocols for effective SAR missions.

The event began with an overview of the Indian Coast Guard’s role in national maritime safety, followed by expert-led sessions addressing emerging challenges and operational best practices. The exchange of ideas among participants highlighted a shared commitment to improving regional SAR capabilities through collaboration, training, and innovation.
