New Delhi, July 29, 2025 — Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a leading defense public sector undertaking (DPSU), today successfully launched “ATAL,” the fifth in a series of eight indigenous Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) being built for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).
The launch ceremony took place with traditional fervour and was graced by Smt Shilpa Agarwal, who ceremoniously launched the vessel amidst chants from the Atharva Veda. Shri Rozy Agarwal, IDAS, Principal Integrated Financial Advisor (PIFA), Coast Guard Headquarters, attended the event as Chief Guest, along with Inspector General Sudhir Sahni, TM, Deputy Director General (Materiel & Maintenance), and other senior officials from the ICG.

Named “ATAL,” the vessel underscores India’s growing capabilities in indigenous shipbuilding. Designed and built entirely by GSL, the 52-meter-long and 8-meter-wide ship displaces 320 tonnes. It is equipped to play a critical role in protecting India’s offshore assets, island territories, and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Its operational duties will include fisheries protection, coastal surveillance, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search-and-rescue missions.
Highlighting the vessel’s strategic importance, Shri Rozy Agarwal emphasized GSL’s indigenous design and construction efforts in meeting ICG’s operational requirements. He praised the project as a key contributor to India’s vision of “Aatmanirbharta” (self-reliance) in defence manufacturing.

“These advanced patrol vessels not only enhance maritime security but also contribute significantly to the local economy by generating employment across MSMEs and other industries involved in the production ecosystem,” he said.
The launch of “ATAL” marks another milestone in GSL’s shipbuilding journey, showcasing its commitment to delivering technologically advanced, locally built vessels that bolster India’s maritime defence.
